Raga CDs of the months (09/08): Surs(h)ringar... the pathfinder of Sarode
Sursringar, behind this âexotic termâ is an Indian instrument of the family Tata Vadya, so called chordophones*. Tata is derived from Tanâ, in its meaning 'pulled on tension'.
The Indian violin, the Sarangi, Indian lutes (Veenas), Sitar and Sarod, Santoor, Surbahar (Bassitar), Tanpura or the Sursringar belong all together to the group of Tata Vadya.
The origin of the Sursringar is remarkable. This stringed instrument roots back to Afghan origin. - The instrument of the Pashtuns is the Rabab. The Pashtuns are East Iranian people living all over South and Central Asia. Before approx. 2500 years the Rabab was introduced to Afghanistan. In India the Rabab (Seni Rabab) was used since the 16th century, during the Mogul regency of Akbar.

After the use at Akbar's court the Rabab was modified at round about 1830 by Jafar Khan, a descendant of Tansen, who was a famous musician at the court of Akbar. The play on the Rabab covered with gut strings was particularly in the monsoon time of India problematic in its tuning.
Javar added a metallic finger board, a wooden head, metal strings of steel and bronze and a bridge similarly the Sitar. 6 play strings and 2 strings for the rhythm run over a flat horn bridge. It is positioned on the sounding body which is closed with a timber cover.
The Sursringar is developed from three different instruments. Beside the Afghan Rabab there is the Mahati Veena and Kachhapi Veena. - The Veenas, the Indian lutes are one of the oldest instruments of India.
The small gourd as resonator and the string anchorage at the neck are elements of the Mahati Veena. The flat sounding body made of a horizontal cut opened gourd is similarly to the Kachhapi Veena (popular called as Kachhapi Sitar).
All modifications of Jafar Khan became well known as Sursringar and remind very much of the Sarod. The Sursringar is understood today as the forerunner (pathfinder) of the Sarod and named as Bass sarode. The tonal quality of the Sarod on itâs own was improved in recent time by modifications of the living legend Ali Akbar Khan.

Sursringar, hinter diesem “exotischen Begriff” verbirgt sich ein indisches Instrument aus der Familie der Tata Vadya, der s.g. Chordophone*. Tata leitet sich aus dem Wortstamm “Tan” ab, in der Übersetzung bedeutet dies so viel wie “auf Spannung gezogen“.
Die indische Violine, die Sarangi, die indischen Lauten (Veenas), Sitar und Sarod, der Santoor, die Surbahar (Bassitar), Tanpura oder die Sursringar gehören allesamt zur Gruppe der Tata Vadya.
Die Herkunft der Sursringar ist bemerkenswert. Dieses Saiteninstrument ist im eigentlichen Sinne afghanischen Ursprungs. – Das Instrument der Pashtunen ist die Rabab. Die Paschtunen sind ein ostiranisches Volk in Süd- und Zentralasien. Vor ca. 2500 Jahren wurde die Rabab nach Afghanistan eingeführt. In Indien hatte man die Rabab (Seni Rabab) bereits im 16. Jahrhundert verwendet, während der Regentschaft von Akbar.

Die Rabab wurde nach der Verwendung am Hofe Akbars von Jafar Khan, einem Abkömmling von Tansen, dem berühmten Musiker am Hofe Akbars, um etwa 1830 modifiziert. Das Spiel auf der mit Darmsaiten bespannten Rabab war besonders in der Monsunzeit Indiens problematisch.
Javar fügte ein metallenes Griffbrett, einen hölzernen Kopf, Metallsaiten aus Stahl und Bronze und eine Brücke ähnlich der Sitar hinzu. 6 Spielsaiten und 2 für den Rhythmus vorgesehene Saiten laufen über eine flache Hornbrücke. Sie sitzt auf dem mit einer Holzdecke geschlossenen Klangkörper.
Die Sursringar entwickelte sich aus drei verschiedenen Instrumenten. Neben der afghanischen Rabab waren es die Mahati Veena und Kachhapi Veena. – Die Veenas, die indischen Lauten, gehören zu den ältesten Instrumenten Indiens.
Der kleine Kürbis als Resonator und die Saitenbefestigung am Halse sind Elemente der Mahati Veena. Der flache Klangkörper aus einem horiozontal aufgeschnitten Kürbis ist ähnlich der Kachhapi Veena (populär als Kachhapi Sitar genannt).
All diese Modifizierung von Jafar Khan wurde als Sursringar bekannt und erinnern sehr an die Sarod. Die Sursringar wird heute als der Vorläufer der Sarod verstanden und auch als Basssarode benannt. Die tonale Qualität der Sarode wurde in jüngerer Zeit durch Modifikationen der lebenden Legende Ali Akbar Khan verbessert.
